Recap of Gary Con: A Weekend of Gaming Adventures

It’s going to take me about a week to unpack everything!

This year at Gary Con I had the chance to run two convention scenarios I’ve been developing for Natural Twenty Games, and I wanted to share a quick recap for everyone who played (and for those who are curious about what I’ve been working on).

Both events were designed as fast-moving convention experiences with strong pregenerated characters, clear objectives, and table-ready reference material so players could jump right in—even if they were brand new to the system.

Event 1: The Sorcerer of Old Geneva (Savage Worlds)

“WANTED: Brave souls to infiltrate the ruins of Old Geneva…”

This adventure is set in a post-apocalyptic sword-and-science future inspired by classic Saturday morning fantasy sci-fi. The players explored the shattered remains of Old Geneva, Wisconsin, investigating strange arcane activity tied to a ley line nexus beneath the lake.

Highlights from the sessions included:

  • mutant “Badgers” ambushes in ruined streets (a nod to Gamma World)
  • unstable arcane spires erupting from the ground mid-encounter
  • and, of course, the final confrontation with the so-called “sorcerer”

Players seemed to especially enjoy the mix of weird science and returning magic, along with the unique pregenerated characters built specifically for convention play.

You can download the pregenerated characters here.

Event 2: The Bloom Below (Castles & Crusades)

In this scenario, former residents of the halfling village of Elmshade returned home after reports of strange fungal corruption spreading across the countryside.

What began as a simple investigation quickly escalated into:

  • creeping vine-walls sealing off the village
  • spore-cloud skies blocking the sun
  • corrupted guardians emerging from the orchard outskirts
  • and a final confrontation with a powerful fungal queen beneath the Shrine of Yondalla

This adventure focused on atmosphere, mounting tension, and a steadily advancing corruption mechanic tied directly to the shrine at the center of the village.

Pregenerated characters for this session are available here.

Convention Design Goals

Both adventures were built around a few principles I try to follow when preparing convention events:

  • start in media res whenever possible
  • give each character a strong identity and role at the table
  • include escalating environmental changes
  • create visual terrain anchors for encounters
  • make sure the finale feels earned and cinematic

Convention time is limited, so every scene has to matter.

Thanks to the Players

A huge thank-you to everyone who joined the tables and helped bring these stories to life. Convention games are always collaborative experiences, and the energy players bring is what makes them memorable.

I’m collecting player photos from the sessions and will add them here as they come in.

What’s Next for Natural Twenty Games?

I’ll be continuing to refine both scenarios based on what I learned at Gary Con AND replacing art with stock or custom art. My goal is to prepare them for broader release as polished convention-ready modules with maps, reference sheets, and printable handouts.

If you played in either session and have feedback—or photos you’d like included—please send them along!

More soon.

Embracing a New Chapter: Life After Microsoft

After years spent navigating the fast-paced corridors of the corporate world at Microsoft, I’ve officially hung up my tie and stepped into retirement. It’s a bittersweet moment, leaving behind a career filled with challenges, growth, and incredible colleagues. But I’m excited—and a little relieved—to finally dedicate more time to the passions that have always fueled me outside of work.

One of my first priorities is giving naturaltwenty.com the attention it deserves. My website and blog have long been a creative outlet and a way to connect with others who share my love for tabletop roleplaying games and storytelling. With fewer meetings and deadlines filling up my calendar, I’m looking forward to sharing more updates, thoughts, and resources with the community.

But that’s not all. Retirement means I can finally focus on writing and publishing material for some of my favorite games, including Savage Worlds, Dragonbane, and others. I’ve always had ideas simmering away—adventures, settings, rule expansions—and now I have the freedom to bring them to life and share them with fellow enthusiasts.

If you’re a fan of roleplaying games, game design, or just curious about this new chapter, I invite you to join me on naturaltwenty.com. Whether you’re a longtime reader or new to the site, I hope to foster a space where creativity, collaboration, and good old-fashioned fun take center stage.

Here’s to new beginnings, rolling dice, and making the most of the adventures ahead!

GaryCon XVI 2024 Events

A placeholder for the upcoming events I’ll be running at GaryCon XVI on March 21-24, 2024 in Lake Geneva, WI.

This year I’ll be running three events with two sessions each, i.e. it’s a three-part adventure, with each session building on the last but you can play any one of the three as they are all self-contained adventures.

Why this format?

I was a fan of the RPGA back in the mid-to-late 90s (I lost my original card, but I did find my DCI online version), and their “Classic” adventure format. The classic format was set to run in a four-hour format with pre-gens provided. Each character had a short blurb about their relationships with each of the other characters, hopefully relating them in a meaningful manner. At the end of the session, there was a voting system where each player would rank the other players, with the winner receiving convention points.

This format differed from the “Living” campaigns (Living City in the Forgotten Realms, Masque of the Red Death a gothic/Ravenloft setting, Virtual Seattle a Shadowrun campaign, etc.,) where you played the same character from convention to convention.

Updates

I’ll be posting weekly design updates including:

  • Pre-gens
  • Some maps
  • Terrain building
  • Miniatures

You can join in on the commentary here or on Facebook.

Ghost of Saltmarsh – Maps for VTT use

Disclaimer – most links to products are leveraging an affiliate program that will result in Natural Twenty Games receiving a small percentage fee. Thanks for your support!

While I love the throwback maps of Ghosts of Saltmarsh, when you’re running VTT software, they just don’t pack the same punch for players or for the DM. Here are a few maps from the first few chapters of the adventure.

I used Dungeondraft and some art packs from Two-Minute Tabletop. I can’t recommend either of these vendors enough. Top-notch software and great quality as well.

Raid the Basement – Intro

I’ve got a lot of gaming stuff. That’s not a brag or a boast. It’s the accumulation of years and years of impulse buying (ADHD), fear of missing out (FOMO), supporting major and/or independent creators, a lot of GenCon’s, and maybe a touch of hoarding tendencies.

I am starting to inventory everything to get ready for a purge and as I do I’m going to post weekly characters or sessions from some of my old games. In reality, I’ve only run a handful of these games so I don’t have a lot of memories of playing them but oh the hours of fun I had making characters or just thinking about running them.

The first game on the list will be Gamma World 2e.
